I've been shaking since about 12:00 p.m., but Dr. Corbett FINALLY called around 12:30 to let me know that Lexie is out of surgery and everything went really well! She said that she was prepared for the worst, but Lexie actually didn't bleed much more than a typical surgery. Yesterday, Dr. Corbett had called to ask my permission to give Lou another blood transfusion because they thought the donor dog's clotting factors would help during Lexie's surgery. I guess maybe they were right!
There was one minor complication, but hopefully it's nothing to worry about too much. Because the gauze had been left in Lexie's eye sockets for a few days, an infection has started. So, they've swabbed the area, which is fortunately close to the surface, and they're going to culture it so they'll know exactly which antibiotics she needs.
Another thing that Dr. Corbett wanted to give me a heads up about is Lou's appearance, because apparently she looks kind of "funny" right now. Dr. Corbett said that Dr. Ellis had actually sewn one of Lexie's eyes vertically instead of horizontally, probably just in her haste to get her sewn up after packing the gauze. Dr. Corbett said that she tried her best to fix the incision, but until her fur grows back, she said Lou may look a little...inquisitive.
Other than that, Dr. Corbett said that Lexie is just fine and is currently snoring away! Haha! Dr. Corbett is going to call me tonight and then I'll know if I can go get her tomorrow. Cross your fingers!
Thank you, everyone, for all your prayers and support. I'm so relieved and happy right now!!!! :D
At the beginning of June, 2012, my 9 year-old Doberman, Lexie (aka "Lou"), was diagnosed with anterior uveitis and secondary glaucoma. After surviving three eye surgeries, sudden blindness, and a subsequent double-mastectomy in the span of less than two months, sadly, I had to say good-bye to my sweet Lou on July 26, 2012, secondary to Stage III mammary carcinoma. Lexie fought so hard for me and endured so much in such a short amount of time. She was my hero, and this is her story.

So happy to read this good news! I've been thinking about you and Lexie all morning. I know we've only met briefly and fall more into the stranger category, but I am rooting for you both and will continue to hope for a speedy recovery.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Megan! It means a lot to me that you've been so concerned about my Lou. :)
DeleteGlad to hear this news about Lexie, doberman-chat has been sending lots of thoughts and prayers your way
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what doberman-chat is, but it sounds like I should be a part of it! Thank you guys so much for all your support. :)
DeleteHi Courtney, I found out about Lexie from Ramsey, Pablo & Suvi's FB page & I sent you a small donation. My heart goes out to you and Lou, it's always so much harder when it's unexpected. I lost my rescued red female Valetta just 5 days after discovering she had DCM. Prior to her rapid onset of symptoms, she had not had any issues whatsoever & it was heartbreaking, so I know a little bit about what you're going through. But, the good news is, she has a lot of dobe & non dobe people praying & pulling for her & I believe you/we are gonna get that happy ending! I also wanted to let you know about a group that was formed specifically for situations like yours. It's called Special Needs Dobermans, www.Doberman911.org. Check them out when you get a chance! I will stay tuned awaiting further updates on your sweet girl & I will continue to pray for both of you.......xoxoxo
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry for the loss of your Valetta, especially so suddenly. I have almost lost Lexie twice now, and both times they were also conditions that developed suddenly and without warning. My heart breaks for you. I cannot tell you how much your support means to me. Thank you so much. :)
DeleteThank god she is doing good. Prayers have been sent.
ReplyDeleteWinston had his surgery today and came thru with flying colors. All is good as of now. I pick him up tomorrow evening. Be to honest, little apprehensive about seeing him for the first time. On the other hand, cannot wait to see him.
Thanks again for your sharing. Would love to help financially, but in the same boat. Good luck Courtney and please keep all us posted.
Amy.
I'm so glad Winston did well with his surgery!!!! I know exactly how you feel about being apprehensive, yet excited to see him. I found out yesterday that one of Lexie's eye incisions is horizontal, but the other is vertical! My boyfriend and I are trying to have a sense of humor about it, but it also breaks my heart a little bit that they had to do that. Dr. Corbett says that once Lexie's fur grows back, though, you won't really be able to tell.
DeleteKeep me posted about Winston and how well he adjusts to being blind. I promise to do the same. Best wishes!
:)
Winnie is home and looks wonderful. Just looks like his eyes are closed. Adjusting to the cone. Just love him so much.
DeleteHope lexie is home soon.
Awww.... I'm so glad to hear that Winston looks so good. Lexie's eyes don't look quite as wonderful as the way you described Winnie's. Her right eye was originally sewn vertically and, although Dr. Corbett tried to kind of correct the incision after her second surgery, it's still kind of crooked. I think it gives her character, though. :)
DeleteKeep me posted!
Thank you so much for the update!
ReplyDeleteI am simply overjoyed to hear of her progress!!! I am also quite thrilled to hear how she has handled this - she is quite a sturdy girl! I cannot wait for her to be home with you. Thank you again so very, very much for sharing this with us.
